The Story

The story of Age of Grand Delusion and Sonic Nomads ensemble(s), began at my last album, Mark Fox - Iridescent Sounds record date, produced by legendary jazz producer, Todd Barkan. When my Executive Producer, John Clark, listened to the raw board mix and was so excited by the music, he asked if I would be open to doing a David Bowie cover song. Being a creative and experimental jazz artist, historically, my reply was “have you listened to the music that we play?”. Of course, the answer was, “yes”. John and Bowie’s relationship dates back to the late-70’s, where John edited David’s first US film release, “The Man Who Fell To Earth”. I was challenged with the request, but intrigued with the creative opportunity of doing a pop song in the Sonic Nomads’ way.

John chose the song, “Word on a Wing”, from Bowie’s Station to Station album. I began a deep-dive study of Bowie’s music and started working on the arrangement and putting the right ensemble for the project together. The song was recorded at Mighty Fine Studios in Denver.

Upon hearing our epic Afro-Beat, Psychedelic, Jazz, Gospel version of “Word on a Wing”, John Clark was so inspired, he committed to funding the writing, recording and production of a full album project to wrap around the Bowie song. This was the first ever non-jazz project I have had to create, write and produce in my career and the origin of this album project, now titled Age of Grand Delusion.

I partnered with my close friend and colleague, notable songwriter & folk artist, Wes Hamil to compose and write the remaining 9 songs that were recorded. The studio session spanned 5 days at Mighty Fine Studios. Lots of subsequent tracking, retracking and mixing over the past few years has finally brought this incredible album project’s production phase to completion. Now it’s time to bring it to the world!
